Mallory, Greyson, and Henry - Oceanside, Ca

I recently had the pleasure to photograph Mallory and her two kids in a studio session in my home garage studio. I’ve known Mallory for years and, like me, she is a big fan of dark black and white portraits. I had been wanting to try out a new background for my black and white portraits and I knew she was the perfect person to try it out with. With these photos, I really wanted to capture photos that highlighted genuine moments between her and her kids rather than nicely posed portraits. I set up my light in a broad way that allowed them to interact without feeling like their movements were restricted in any way. Mallory, as you can see, is great in front of the camera and her sweet interactions with her kids made for amazing and timeless portraits. I hope next time we shoot we can incorporate her husband into the mix as well!

My favorite image from the session. As a photographer I love understated and slightly more quiet moments like this one. I love the way she is embracing her daughter as she looks off, almost as if looking into her future and her mother is supporting and embracing her. I think genuine expressions like these make for beautiful portraits.
